Common dental problems may begin innocently enough-as is the case with gingivitis-but they do not go away on their own. The anaerobic bacteria cause an infection in the gums during gingivitis and that is essentially all gum disease really is-an infection. With gingivitis, this infection is contained in the gums and only causes mild symptoms-such as bleeding.
